Living Root Bridges

In the northeast Indian state of Meghalaya, Khasi and Jaintia tribal people have created living root bridges, which are a form of tree shaping. Here, simple suspension bridges are made by training the roots of the Ficus elastica species of banyan tree across watercourses. There are examples with a span of over 170 feet (52 m).They are naturally self-renewing and self-strengthening as the component roots grow thicker and some are thought to be more than 500 years old.

In the Iya Valley of Japan, bridges have been constructed using wisteria vines. To build such a bridge, these vines were planted on opposite sides of a river and woven together when they grew long enough to span the gap. The addition of planks produced a serviceable bridge.

Elephant Falls

12 km on the outskirts of the city, the mountain stream descends through three successive falls set in dells of fern covered rocks.

Umiam Lake

Meghalaya, India

Umiam Lake (commonly known as Barapani Lake) is a reservoir in the hills 15 km (9.3 mi) north of Shillong in the state of Meghalaya, India. It was created by damming the Umiam River in the early 1960s. The principal catchment area of the lake and dam is spread over 220 square km.

Wah Kaba Falls

Wah Kaba Falls is a waterfall located near Cherrapunji in Meghalaya, in the north east of the country. The waterfall descends from a steep rockface and drops approximately 170-190 metres into a gorge. There is a local legend that two fairies live at the falls. The falls can be seen on the way to Cherrapunji from Shillong.
